Wanting to give Mail4Exchange a shot but no clue what I need for personal email usage.

you need an exchange host... or try your work account assuming you use exchange there. It worked for me last fall on my E61... should be great on the N-Series with official support. It brought my N73 to the ground when it was running previously though...
The only reason to use this for OTA sync with contacts, Cal and mail. It's best if you share this info with others... otherwise, you can do just fine with the google apps and sync OTA cal with GooSync which is what I've done for quite a while successfully.
If you use IMAP for email Exchange will take it to the next level with the other PIM apps...
Contacts and calendar don't change often enough to care about that, but I'm getting a TON of email daily now. I want for all my notices and junk to go, somewhere else, and all the real email to hit my phone within minutes.
Until Google releases an update to Gmail mobile auto-refresh is not happening. I want that too. There's also no way to send an attachment or use tags in the mobile client - though you can browse your tag folders if you set that up in views.
None of the apps do push... just timed updates. Mail4Exchange can do it... just need a new host. If you forward, of course you'll then have to places to manage and file mail...
timed updates is fine. What I DON'T want anymore is to have to pull up my Gmail app to check my mail everytime. I want automatic polling, at least every 10-20 minutes. I also don't want to get my blog notices, or youtube notices, or any other junk of that sort on my phone's inbox.
I'll probably end up spending some quality time with tags in Gmail and then set it up on my built-in app
Ah - you meant tags for forwarding / filtering. Yeah - that should work fine and you could do quite a bit to limit what shows up - though a POP client will actually not see any of that and give you everything. I've yet to find any mail client that can actually see and take advantage of GMail offers - the disadvantage of being a unique way on mail.
I tried Seven as well. It's cool how it integrates as a regular looking account, but the missing sync is a bummer. I want to be able to see my sent mail from search in gmail as well. Be nice if the G released an API or some additional tools so we could do more.
Then just set up a filter to exclude those kind of emails :) I also have a filter that forwards me urgent emails by way of people adding a secret identifier to the subject line.
It seems to me that the only way to get around that is to use 2 email addresses and not POP Gmail. All your email goes into your Gmail account. All your important stuff is being forwarded while being archived by Gmail so you don't have to read it again when you come back to your computer.
I'm not sure. I might have completely missed your point though :)
I don't use a POP email client anymore. That's setup works for me. I doesn't work when you use Outlook obviously. I wasn't paying attention to that detail.
With this setup, only a small fraction of your email comes through to your Nokia mail client. And if you really wanted you could still check all of your email with Googles Gmail app. on your own terms.
Ok, so let's make sure I've got this right: I'm going to setup a free Mail2Web account. I have 2 email addresses. I forward both (independently) to my Mail2Web account, which I access through Mail4Exchange. I also have my Gmail account pulling them in (well, one is my gmail anyways).
Unfortunately, I can't help you there since I don't use Outlook or bother with any other desktop client. It shouldn't be too difficult though to get your Outlook to sync with Mail2Webs account on their Exchange server. I know it's possible; I'm just not sure if they allow you to do that.
I'm just shocked at the apparent complications people run into trying to get a good email solutions on their mobiles. My web host dreamhost offers IMAP accounts and supports IMAP-idle so I get built in push from just the standard s60 mail client.
The problem with that used to be that some of the Nokia phones had a firmware bug that caused problems with IMAP idle. The E61 was definitely one of the affected handsets.
I'm not quite sure if that was resolved by recent firmware updates. It caused a lot of problems when I first got my E61 that's why I looked for other solutions.
I was cool on the E61, but whenever sync was active on the N73 it was impossible to use - and you did not get the nice mailbox update on the standby screen

If you don't use exchange you can always open a free account with an exchange host. Just search google.

I'm looking into Mail2Web, but also struggling with what I really want it to do

Here's what I really want: push (or semi-push) email on my mobile through Gmail. I think I'm just going to experiment more with tags and pop in Gmail.

You could try the new Seven push email beta. It reportedly works with Gmail; it doesn't sync back though.

Or you could set up a filter in Gmail and forward the really important email to your mail2web address.

I wish this was easier, lol.

See that's the problem. Even if I setup all those tags and filters, I'm still going to get all the junk on my phone's inbox. That's what I DON'T want.
I was hoping that I could setup the filters in Outlook, and then have something only send the emails that get through to my inbox to my mobile.

Also I don't like that when you pop Gmail, if you login on a web browser and send an email, the phone's email app pulls that as a received email.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
Also I don't guess Gmail popped allows you to specify which domain to send from, if i've got three accounts pulling into Gmail.

Actually, I think that sounds close to what I'm looking for. Forward all my Gmail to another email (perhaps Mail2Web?) and then pop THAT email?
Argh.

Sorry Ricky. I got it now!
I don't use a POP email client anymore. That's setup works for me. I doesn't work when you use Outlook obviously. I wasn't paying attention to that detail.

That's exactly what I'm doing (Mail2Web, Mail for Exchange on Nokia.)
But, as I said, I use Gmail's web client :)
1 year, 12 months ago by andydigitale
That's not a bad setup, sounds like. I don't really need Outlook for email. I dont use it for email now, just gmail.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden

And when you come back to your PC the email that you have read is already flagged as read and archived.

As a side note: another nice benefit of using Mail for Exchange (aka Mail2Web) and the Gmail web interface is that you connect to both via SSL.
This means your email cannot be intercepted or sniffed by a hacker. It's very safe.
Just make sure you go to https://mail.google.com and you set up Mailfor Exchange to use SSl in the preferences :)

You have it the wrong way around.
Pipe your 2 independent email addresses through Gmail (no need to get Gmail to poll them, just forward them to Gmail.)
Set up a free Mail2Web address.
Set up some filters in Gmail that forward 'important' email to your Mail2Web address.
If you do it this way, then you still have Gmail catching most of your spam and you can use the filter/tag system to sort and archive your mail.

AHA! The trick is going to be getting Gmail to send my mobile the right emails.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
Yep! You got it!
1 year, 12 months ago by andydigitale
So now the trick is getting Mail4Exchange setup on my N95, as well as through Outlook
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden

Setting up Mail for Exchange on the Nokia is a breeze!
1 year, 12 months ago by andydigitale
Mail2Web indeed seems to support desktop synchronization http://tinyurl.com/32ntuj

Are you actually using Mail2Web and Mail4Exchange on your S60 device? I'm having trouble setting things up.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
Sure! Where are you stuck?
1 year, 12 months ago by andydigitale
Wait, nevermind. Mail4Exchange is synched. So now I setup a filter on Gmail to forward whatever emails I want, to my mail2web account, right?
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
Yes. You can be as sophisticated as you want with this. Gmail is pretty flexible in this area.
1 year, 12 months ago by andydigitale
this filter is going to be harder than I thought. I think for now i"M just going to forward everything.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
I wish I could tell Gmail that if it doesn't match the other filters, to send that through.
1 year, 12 months ago by rcadden
Yes, that would make things easier. Great idea, by the way!
