Public. I tend not to bother trying to friend people who have
their updates as private, simply because I get the idea that they'd
rather friend new contacts themselves, rather than having random
people friend them. That's the impression I get, anyway. YMMV.
I'd love to have private channels for a group, or a download
version of Jaiku for private groups! Some one should ape
Jaiku/Twitter and come up with GPL'ed version, or has somebody
already done that?
Public, that way I've engaged with a lot of interesting people.
Although I understand the ideas of private channels even that might
start to dilute the extraordinarily interesting way that
connections can be made on Jaiku. Would prefer to be able to
totally block people (so they don't even show up on explore). Would
only use in extreme circumstances

Public. I'm generally pretty anonymous on the web, but it
wouldn't take a genius to figure out who I am. I had a stalker last
year that followed me to Jaiku and that freaked me for a bit. Now I
say, bring it on.
Public. I stopped trying to hide online when I realized how
useless it is. If someone wants to find me they will and if someone
is going to take offense at what I write here that's their
problem

nothing is really private on here, even if you think it is. This is
the net. And yes, I only put stuff in email I want
to be there....

Anything that goes out of your mouth or down on paper (sic) is
considered to be "unsafe" (as far as information leaks are
concerned). Of course, there should be reasonable paranoia too -
aka be "paranoid" when it is needed.
